Adonijah back in soca fray

Respect is due to the senior members of society, many of whom still have much to contribute says Adonijah.
That is the message in Someting Lef In De Bottle, one of the calypsonian's songs for Crop Over 2012.
“Too many people assume automatically that when people have reached a certain age, they are done,” says the veteran who marks 31 years in Crop Over this season.
He added: “I decided that it was time that people realize a BARP card is not a death certificate, and so I wrote a song which I believe will become the anthem of the mature members of not just this society, but of all the places where calypso and soca are played.”
To actually write both songs took about two months, with some tweaking, but Adonijah had the concept for both songs from last year.
His method is to come up with choruses first, because the chorus is where the essence of the message you want the listener to take away can be found.
“I realized there were few, if any, songs that were aimed deliberately at older people; so I thought I should adapt a commonly used expression in Barbados, Someting Lef’ In De Bottle, and celebrate that demographic.”
The artiste who created and sang the classic Woman, considered the anthem of women in Barbados, says he is looking forward to this season, which started for him in De ADC/Digicel Big Show on June 7.
“I returned to competition last year after a break of six years and really enjoyed the experience. My approach is different now and as a result last year did not carry the stress I usually associate with
the competition.
“I have the same feeling this year and am looking forward to enjoying this season more than 2011.”
Someting Lef’ In De Bottle is the first song that Adonijah has written and recorded for Party in years, he says. He has
entered the Sweet Soca competition, as well as Pic-O-De-Crop.
The recording will feature in Tite Choonz, Volume 7, produced by Mister Dale, who is
also a member of De ADC/Digicel Big Show cast this year.
The song was recorded at Loc’d Down Production Company studio, owned and operated by musicians Shawn Layne and Nicholas Timothy.
Does Adonijah have Something Lef’ In
The Bottle? “Artistically, I am branching out in other genres of music. I have recorded a rock ballad entitled Gloria Jean, which I plan to release after the season.
“I also have two other rock songs I want to record, as well as a cover of Peter Tosh’s
Equal Rights, a collaboration with Easy B. So nuff drinks lef' in de bottle,” he said laughing.
Adonijah’s other song this year is Congratulations, which he describes as “tongue-in-cheek praises for some individuals and organizations that have done noteworthy things over the past year”.
“Those who loved Barbados X 2, which is still being quoted in the highest seats of
power, will for sure enjoy Congratulations,” he says. “The lion is roaring loud and strong for Crop Over 2K12. Don’t miss it.”
And yes, Adonijah is a proud owner of a BARP card, which he always uses. (NSH)
